I worked there and did that in Marathon, Florida in the late 1980s. Much of the details are based on actual events and the storyline is true for the era. It was an okay book that kept my interest. If your interested in reading about the gofast smuggling of the 80s in South Florida you will probably enjoy the book. As with all works of fiction there are some parts that are not believable.Tags : Mid Ocean [T. Rafael Cimino] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Mid Ocean by: T. So I grew up in the Fl Keys from the 70s- post Andrew. This book was FANTASTIC PEOPLE. There were so many true facts in the book. The story line was great. When you are a kid in the keys and you can't drink and don't own a boat, you spend many a days on the rocks, docks, or canals reading and watching the square grouper float by. I know keys life and this book told it ALL. A Must Read, that is if you want the truth.
I first saw parts of the story on NGC but it was mostly about boats. The author T. Rafael Cimino had a sound bite on the show and a credit where his book was mentioned. I enjoyed the book so much better that the TV program.
One word sums up this great book…..Awesome! It is energized and full of action! From the moment you begin to read this book, you feel as if you are there in each scene. You are captivated and drawn in to the story and feel as if you know each character in the book. The author, Mr. Cimino, has a style of writing that creates imagery and brings to life each scene in the story with amazing detail. If you like adventure, suspense, action, and intrigue you will love this book! This is a 5-Star Read!

I was looking for a book that reads like a movie and I found it. Although it was a decent book, I wish that he would have done a little more research, or that his sources would have given him a little more accurate information on the small things that I just couldn't get past. The small item that bothered me the most was when he referred to FLETC being located in Glencoe, Georgia. The FLETC campus is in Glynco, GA, something that is very easy to look up and that a quick search would have revealed. There are a few other errors like this, all minor yet all are VERY easily researched. Really that's just me being picky, though. Overall it was a good read.
Crime novels are a dime a dozen. Most of them allow us to peer into the real criminal underworld at some level, albeit their stories are fiction. However, Mid Ocean author, T. Rafael Cimino, has crafted a work that has met the bar set by the likes of Puzo, Dan Brown and Lawrence Block; basically changing the names to protect the innocent, and guilty, in an exposé of paradise lost in America's war on drugs in South Florida.
Early on you get the sense that this author, like many of his antagonists, is going to throw caution the wind and risk it all, to give us the most intimate of details; details that only those who were involved in one of this nation's most notorious crime decades would know. Instead of Cimino's prose getting bogged down in a minutia of facts, his risk taking pays off brilliantly as he immerses us in a fascinating, heart-racing journey that both educates and entertains. It was hard to put this book down.
It's obvious that Cimino's research was impeccable. I'm usually not a big fan of written fiction because I agree with the adage, "truth is stranger than fiction," and cable television's Discovery Channel and National Geographic is more than willing to drown me in it, thus it takes something special to keep my attention to finish a 422 page novel. Mid Ocean grabbed that attention from the first chapter and didn't let go until I finished.
Cimino's writing style was refreshing and unique in that his chapters were continuously short, but this was a good thing, especially, when you've got a story to tell like Mid Ocean tells. In addition, rarely, if ever, do I find myself getting choked up over good guys fighting bad guys, but Cimino was able to get my heart to sigh on several occasions, and my eyes to well up at one point.
As someone who likes to walk away from a story pondering a question or philosophical life lesson, Cimino's Mid Ocean did not disappoint. You finish with a clear idea of who these people were on both sides of the eighties war on drugs, and what was gained or lost; and more importantly, if there was any redemption at the end of it all. What you find will surprise you.
I see a lot of folks who have posted their desire to see Mid Ocean brought to film. Who of us hasn't watched The Godfather, GoodFellas or Scarface more than several times? I think it's safe to say, that with the right screenplay adaptation, cast and crew, Mid Ocean would find its place among these greats. I hope to see more work from this author in the future.
WOW I can smell the salt of the ocean and the wet mangrove roots. This book takes you right into the heart of life in S Fla during that time. You have to pay close attention to who's who, but the way he intertwines the characters and paints the scenery of the waterways of the Fla Straights and the inner workings of the boatyards...just takes you right there. Very interesting and entertaining reading. A MUST for anyone that lived in S Fla during that time and if you are a "Scarface" or "Miami Vice" fan, you will enjoy reading this book.
Mid Ocean, by Todd Rafael Cimino, HAS NAILED IT !!! From "Prologue" to "Epilogue", all 422 pages of this gripping novel finally gets out the truth that others have only talked/dreamed about doing for over 30+ years. Growing up as a "G.I. Brat" in Homestead, Miami, and the Keys, I can, from my own personal expieriances, attest to the reality depicted in this novel, as well as anyone from the South Florida area. I am a 55 year old retired Army UH-60 Black Hawk Aviator who worked Special Ops. No matter which "Side of the Tracks" you were on, or not, you'll love Cimino's finely tuned accuracy on ALL details. From the characters and types of powered vessels, to the locations, events, situations, highs, lows, and outcomes, Cimino really does NAIL this era to a tee. I'm not an expert on what should or should not become a movie, but something tells me this novel has "Movie" stamped all over it and is destined to become one. Respectfully Submitted, CW2 Charles E. Compton Sr. (RET) USAR Army Aviator. Check T.Rafael Cimino out at; [...]
