Jinger Andrews is a pretty ordinary college student. She goes to class and lives in the dorms with her roommate and best friend, Eloise Gears. After some strange occurrences, Jinger finds herself in the world of Ferrum. It's a world of strange inventions, automatons, and a mix of the past and future. Upon arriving, Jinger finds out that she is a guardian. Guardians are always human and are unknowingly bonded to a future senator of Ferrum. Her only purpose is to protect her bonded at all costs. Even if it costs her her life. But there are secrets on Ferrum and no one seems to ever want to answer her questions. Jinger isn't one to just sit around and finds herself falling into trouble and trying to figure out what is going on in this new world. The only way she has a chance of surviving is the new friends that she makes and the inner beings that are there to aid her and provide her with the powers and weapons that she needs - she just needs to find them first. This Steampunk-esque tale is the first book in the Guardians of Ferrum series. Look for Inner Peace, book 2, coming 2013!

I beta-read a copy of Inner Strength and was not at all disappointed. This isn't the only book I've read by this author and although I liked the previous work, this one was much better. The story follows Jinger Andrews who leads a pretty good life, but then is transported through a "dream-world" to a world called Ferrum. There she learns that she was selected to be a Guardian of one of the possible future-senators. Now although her selection was odd, it wasn't just random, and the author did a very good job of making it original as opposed to the general secret-past-with-magical-ancestors-theme. As a guardian, Jinger receives power through an inner being she dubs "Strength."Ferrum is a very imaginative, well thought-out setting. It's a good mix of both advanced technology and past customs. People wield swords and ride artificial horses. It's separated into multiple regions that are seemingly at peace as the industries of each region are needed to be shared among one another. Although they are at peace, they still need Guardians for some reason, and that's where the plot mixes in. Not long after arriving, Jinger is warned of various "incidents" and rumors involving rogue guardians or guardians/senators gone missing, and is contacted by a heavily detested underground group said to be responsible for the "incidents", and shadily antagonized by those thought to be allies to Ferrum. Jinger believes there are more threats than what she was told about, and works to draw power from her "Inner Strength" in order to combat them so that she may protect herself and to do her job as a Guardian.
So you have the plot, and I'll admit that it was very well detailed and paced. It wasn't all action, or drawn out too long, and there's a little bit of everything, including romance. Even at points which seem to be intervals between the main twists, you still get a lot of information which keeps the story interesting. Jinger is a strong female lead, although she does have her weak points, particularly with her emotions. But her strengths and weaknesses keep her more realistic.
Overall I give the story a 4.67 out of 5. Great plot, setting, characters, and prose. I definitely am looking forward to the next book in the series.
