I have enjoyed works by Rebecca Wells in the past, and this one started off in a magical, engaging fashion through the eyes of Calla Lily, a child. But once this child reached 18, (about 1/4 into the book) it quickly, sadly, came off the rails.

The age of the protagonist changed, but not the mental dialogue. Her life was juvenile, shallow, and pedestrian. I kept thinking it would turn around based on the introduction, so I plodded along albeit with the more-than-occasional eye roll. It never did make the full circle. I teach 7th & 8th grade, and truly it read like something one of my students would write about imaging life/love/infatuations of an adult.

In hindsight I think perhaps it was my fault that I thought it so engaging in the beginning. Calla and I were born in the same year, so I could so easily and lovingly identify with her childhood. She grew up with nature being intertwined with her life, as did I. And she had a magical, loving mother that tenderly reminded me of my own grandmother. So perhaps it was nostalgia that made me enjoy it so much during the first quarter of the book. At any rate, buying it at the e-book special of $1.99 I still feel like I overpaid! And I'd like my time back. A sad statement to write about such a talented writer.

Wonderful story of love, loss, and life. I loved this sweet feel-good story of a girl's coming of age in the South. The characters are colorful, and so well developed that you feel like they are real people that you know. This story, although grounded with the tribulations and losses that come along with life, has a whimsical quality as well. Didn't want this book to end...., but it ended in a satisfying way.
I'm another person sitting here, pondering why this book received the bad reviews it got. I was enthralled with Calla, her wondrous mother and their special relationship, Papa, Calla' s two best friends and all the many other characters in this great read.
No, it is not the Ya-Ya' s - but I can see another book written about Calla and all the rich friendships she was born with and met during this time and "La Luna" space and place sometime in Ms. Wells future. And I'll be right there, waiting to get my hands and eyes in it!!! 5 stars for introducing us to another set of "crazy", amazing Louisianan's and their mystical, moonlit lives.
Wow! If I could give this book ten stars I would. Simply stunning from beginning to end. Hard to read when you are laughing, crying, praying, and dancing at the same time! When I read Well's book, Divine Secrets of the YaYa Sisterhood years ago, it was like reading about my mother's life in Louisiana. With Callie I could see myself. If you only read one book this year, make it this one.
I'm reading this book a second time. The setting and story give a beautiful description of growing up in the South which is meaningful for me, having grown up in the South myself. It is a 'coming of age' story that gets better and better as the story unfolds. There is humor, heartache, redemption, and intrigue throughout. I would compare this book to the so-called 'chick flick' in the movie realm. Easy read, nice escape, great characters, love stories throughout, and some real surprises along the way.
This is life, taken perfectly and tranposed-reflected into words. The right words that make you feel. This is marketed as fiction yet it is real life written in a way that touches many no matter who they are or where they are from. This is women....their live. These words are put together and mashed up and shaken just right to touch you where you need it. I had to make this story last. I read often, 4 books a week because they are gifts. This one I knew not to read too fast because it was written for me. Today is January 4th, the 6 th anniversary of my husband's passing and early this morning ,all alone I read the part of Sweet's passing. For the first time, I began to feel whole again thru the story. I cried. I needed to. Thank you.
This is a good, easy read but to be truthful, I expected a little more from this author. I enjoyed the atmosphere of the town and the sweet people and friends of Calla Lily Ponder and her family and that is what kept me reading more than the story line.

This may seem petty of me but there were times when reading it that I thought, "If she repeats the word "La Luna" one more time I may chuck it but there was enough to enchant, keep me reading and possibly order more.
This book is a perfect beach read....easy to read, full of memorable characters, and with an ending that wraps everything up neatly. However, it is a good deal more than that. In much the same way as Wells' Ya-Ya books, this is a thought-provoking look at life in its many, varied aspects, where good, smart people endure their own mistakes and life's many disasters and learn to live, love, and forgive. Like her other books, it is peopled with characters who will stay in Kurt memories for years, and that includes the towns, not just the people. It is an easy read, but deserves a lot of after-thought.
