Only two people were in a position to experience all the events leading up to the first flight of a viable airplane, and here in three short essays they report how it came about. The idea of powered flight was so new that there were not even accepted methods of measuring the forces at play on a machine in-flight. The Wright brothers had to develop their own testing methods and conduct experimentation before they finally began to design something theoretically capable of the feat. Most vexing of all was the problem of control - how to conduct a controlled turn when the forces are unbalanced. Without boring you with calculations they explain how they tested different wing shapes and control vanes and then verified them in hundreds of flights in a glider. Finally, in December, 1903, they achieved their milestone "the flight lasted only 12 seconds, but it was nevertheless the first flight in the history of the world in which a machine carrying a man had raised itself by its own power into the air in full flight, had sailed forward without reduction of speed, and had finally landed at a point as high as that from which it started."

Okay, so I'm cheap. I was looking for "free" books to use with my Amazon Kindle android app and this looked interesting. This "early history" is certainly that. It is a collection of writings by both Orville and Wilbur Wright telling about their early experiments in gliders, and their first powered flights. This is not someone's interpretation of the Wright Brothers' research but is, rather, a report BY the Wright Brothers of their research and in that context, this is a very interesting read. I certainly enjoyed it.

Early History of the Airplane (Audible Audio Edition) Oriville Wright Wilbur Wright Mark F Smith Spoken Realms Books Reviews

The Wright Bros' own accounts of their process of achieving controlled, powered flight. One was evidently written around 1908, another in 1901 or '02, so they are very contemporary to the events described. Hard to tell if these are standalone articles or excerpts from a book. Quick read, worth a shot.
I really enjoy source material but must admit that sometimes the technical information was slightly beyond my understanding. Perhaps the illustrations make that easier. (mine had no images)
This book is written with an amazing amount of technical detail. Although Orville was not formally trained as an engineer, his descriptions are very compelling. His words took me back to the turn of the last century circa 1900. As a pilot with over 40 years of flying experience, I shared many of his concerns and reservations. They are applicable to flight today.
From one half of the creators of powered flight comes a very readable documentary of their work leading up to their historic flight and subsequent advances in aviation. Aviation buffs, engineers, scientists historians and anyone else with an interest in early Wright work will no doubt enjoy this book.
Fascinating description of the dawn of powered flight by the instigators themselves. Clearly written and to the point, obviously intended more to educate than impress the reader, it is a pleasant and informative read.
The Brothers Wright were especially dedicated to this business of getting something to fly successfully. It was of interest to have described so well the details involved in solving one problem after another in an area where little had been done before..The frequent advice and consultation p supplied by others during the early 1900s is seldom mentioned and was of great help in actually getting a plane to fly with a pilot on board.
This book consists of three articles (I think about 5000 words each) written by Orville Wright, describing the thought processes he and Wilbur went through during their experiments into powered flight, the hiccups along the way, and how they achieved their goal. It *is* packed with quite a lot of technical information, so if you're looking for an easy read this isn't it unless you already have a technical background. For all that, I found it engaging, free from any self-aggrandisment or intent to self-advertise, and extremely interesting.

It lost a star on 3 counts 1) I would have liked it to be longer, 2) I would have liked the story of the Wrights themselves fleshed out a bit more around the development of their aeroplane (will have to buy other books for that), and 3) there's a bit too much technical analysis for the book to appeal to the masses. But those are small quibbles in an otherwise excellent read. 99c well spent.
